Last Saturday a well-deserved victory for a very young Reserve team was gained in the sunshine at Chestnut Avenue. Woods were forced to make a major change before the game started when debutant goalkeeper Tony Cornick turned his ankle in the warm up, leaving another debutant, 17 year old Tautas Poniskatis to be thrown in at the deep end. What a debut he made! He was outstanding throughout the game and didn’t put a foot wrong all afternoon. His decision making was exemplary and he could be a great find for the club.

The Woods finished by winning the game 1-0, but with no thanks to a very poor referee. If he had made decisions like the Woods keeper, then the score would have been more. In a very even first half when both teams went close to opening the score, the ref made a vital error when the Met Police keeper brought down Andy Murphy for a blatant penalty. Not only did he wave play on, but he should have penalised the keeper and sent him off.

He did, however, award the Police a penalty two minutes into the second half when he decided Elliot Gibbs had pushed the Police striker. Justice was done when the resultant kick came back off the post and the Police were caught offside from the rebound.

Further penalty appeals for the Woods went unheeded when Murphy again took a battering up front. The Woods got the all important goal two minutes from the end of normal time, when another young debutant, George McCluskey, drove home a cross shot into the far corner after a good run and pass from Nick Fearon.
There were some excellent performances, especially from the keeper, Elliot Gibbs, John Sonuga, Tom Jansen and young McCluskey.
